Week 2/100

Part 1

Top 3 things I'm good at:

  1. keeping to a schedule
  2. extracting meaning and main ideas when reading
  3. writing from an outline
Top 3 things that need work:
  1. removing distractions from my study space
  2. taking notes consistently
  3. going back to recite what I've read
Part 2

Part 3
Projects are efforts to complete some objective that is aligned with a business strategy in a way that is bound by time, cope, and cost. The project manager is the CEO of a project, responsible for its execution. A work breakdown structure is a hierarchical breakdown of all deliverables in a project. It's organized from the entire project scope to major deliverables, and then recursively any sub-deliverables until there is an exhaustive list. The purpose is to define the full scope of the project and support creating a schedule and budget. Gantt charts are used to plan projects by drawing bars across a horizontal timeline indicating the start and end of each task. Each task lives on its own row in the chart. Milestones for deliverables should also be denoted on the Gantt chart.

Part 4

1. OtterParsing
This project is a recruiter tool to improve resume ingestion and review. One thing that wasn't mentioned was any interviews with the expected users of this project. Understanding the most important problem that needs solving is important to know that a project is worth doing in the first place. I think they did work together effectively. I like that every group member had a role in the presentation, and that they led with an overview/schedule of the presentation. There were some terms of art used in the presentation that I didn't know, and I would have liked to understand better. Listing the tools used and what they do would have been nice, e.g. spaCy I had to look up on my own to follow the presentation.

2. Security Scan Summary Project
The project was code security risk analysis management tool. Very good that the problem statement was well defined and understood by the team. It appears the project was done well because it sounds like their customer at the US NRO was happy with the results. The team described all terms of art so someone not familiar with the problem space can follow along. The examples of inputs and outputs was thorough. Static slides would have been helpful for me - I like reading more than watching.

3. Open Energy Dashboard
The project was a refactoring of energy resources management tool to react/redux. I think they had a good project, and they showed some good examples of positive improvements from the deliverables. The presentation described the tools used very clearly. Some of the visuals were very distracting. The computer animations and stock video clips that were not direct evidence of the work technology could have been dropped.

Part 5
I have not done a lot of work with APA style citations, even though I have read a lot of them, so I'm glad to have a unit on this material. I'm already very familiar with project management and developing study habits so this was a good review. I've been an organization leader and have been through specific executive leadership trainings; the reinforcement on teamwork and communication is always welcome! I also reviewed the need to stay on top of technology trends and target career objectives that align with where the industry is going, and some ways that we can do that including networking and building a personal brand.

  1. Hi Josh! As someone who also has to split my schedule between work and school, your schedule log looks a lot like mine! I usually end up not having time until late nights and weekends to get classwork done, but like you I have it committed to a schedule which helps me keep on top of my coursework. It could also be worth it to dedicate some small break time in between long stretches of schoolwork, like on your weekends when you do schoolwork from 1:00pm to 5:30pm, you can perhaps add in a 30 minute break section to give yourself a small mental rest. Overall, great job!
